The Matrix Online offers many different forms of Player versus player
combat
(PvP) inside of the game. The most common form of PvP
combat in the Matrix is the duel, where two players agree to fight each other
in a test of skill or honor. The next major form of Player vs. Player combat
in The Matrix Online is Organization vs. Organization, which is available
in Constructs, such as the Archive. Inside these constructs, players representing
different organizations battle for control.
During the final days of The Matrix Online beta test, players got a
taste of PvP combat outside of the Constructs and inside the Mega City itself.
In the final hours of the last revision of the Matrix, chaos reigned and the
streets erupted in crazed violence. This form of player vs. player combat did
not end with the close of beta...
There are two types of server worlds in The Matrix Online:
- Normal Server (No Label)
On these servers, the Truce is on unstable footing. On Normal servers, when the
Truce begins to unravel, players will be able to use the Opt-in
system described below to participate in OvO combat. Dueling and the Constructs
are also available.
- Hostile Servers
On these servers, the Truce is routinely violated, with Organizations violently
operating in low-intesity conflicts throughout the Matrix. Rogue agents of
the three organizations are disavowed with a wink and a nod, and their operatives
and representatives openly battle each other throughout the Mega City. On these
servers, players can opt in for OvO combat before level 15, but at level 16
and beyond, the OvO flag is turned on permanently. Dueling and Constructs are
also available as normal.
On all worlds, players who want to experience PvP combat between Organizations
without using the /duel command will be able to do so. Since it's strictly
Organization based, players will have the opportunity to roleplay the battles
between factions with opposing alliances.
In order to take part in PvP combat, you need to earn a reputation with one of the Organizations. Once you've completed the initial Zion missions, you can earn reputation points by completing missions for Zion, the Machines, or the Merovingian. This means that newer players will have some time to get used to their new lives inside the Matrix before they can access this feature.
Once you're aligned with an Organization, you turn on PvP by doing any of the following:
- Typing /pvp in the chat window.
- Attacking another player who has PvP enabled.
- Using any Ability on a player who has PvP enabled.
- Having a Simulacra or other "proxy" attack or use an Ability on a player with PvP enabled.
Players with PvP enabled will have a red flag next to their character names. When your PvP flag is on, you can be attacked by players with opposing Organizations but you can still only attack players who have their PvP flags on.
The PvP flag remains on for five minutes before automatically switching off again. Performing any of the actions listed above resets the five-minute timer. Your PvP flag also turns off after you're killed.
On a Hostile world, your character's PvP flag will be on permanently once s/he has reached level 16. Up until that point, you can also participate in PvP combat using the Opt-in system.
The Matrix Online includes the option of Organization versus Organization combat so players can fully experience the ongoing struggle of the Matrix storyline. If Player versus Player combat isn't your thing, you can easily avoid it by not taking any of the actions listed above (and by not stepping outside the Organization safe-zones in the Constructs). You can still participate in the storyline by taking missions for your chosen Organization.
